Using an exfoliator on your skin can yield unwanted results if you do not choose the correct type. With so much to choose from these days it is much easier to find something suited to your skin.

Sensitive skin

For those with sensitive skin you should try and find a gentle exfoliator, preferably a natural one suitable for your skin type. Look for ingredients such as sugar, jojoba, vitamin E and Aloe Vera. Also make sure that there are no harsh chemicals such as parabens in the scrub (these can be identified by the suffix ‘paraben.’) Look for retailers and websites that promote natural, handmade products and you will find that these are fine for sensitive skin. If you do find a daily scrub then it may not be necessary to use it on a daily basis even if it is for sensitive skin, if you find that you can use it just three times a week and gain the desirable results then do so.

Dry skin

With dry skin you need to ensure you get a product that won’t dry you out even more, just the process of putting water on your face to wash the scrub off will dry your skin. Try and find a product formulated for your skin type or turn to other methods of exfoliation for example you can buy exfoliating facial wipes which need no water to work. They will also remove makeup, cleanse and tone. Try and use a natural product, ones with chemicals in tend to dry your skin out even if they do claim to be moisturising. When using any product even one that is formulated to moisturise your skin, apply a moisturiser afterwards whilst your skin is still wet.

Oily skin

For this skin type you need to ensure that the product does not contribute to your oiliness. You could get away with using a daily scrub to remove oil and all the dirt that clings to it. This will prevent spots, rid you of that oily feel and prepare your skin for makeup.

Acne prone skin

There are products out there specifically produced to combat acne, even if you just get one or two spots every so often or you suffer with acne quite badly investing in a product such a Clear and Clear face scrub can help to keep skin clear. If you prefer natural products then look at ones that contain tee tree and that are non-comedogenic, meaning they don’t clog pores, this will help to banish spots. These should be used daily or according to the instructions on the pack. When washing your face with the scrub, to wash it off you should use cold water, although this is less preferable to using warm water (especially with the impending winter months approaching) but it will help close your pores to any oil or gunk from your makeup that may cause spots.

With the thrifting trip approaching and little knowledge of what I should be looking for I thought I’d do some research into spotting the good items. I could go into any thrift store and look for pieces whether they be vintage or not but I don’t want to find myself buying crap not matter how much I like it. So, pay attention this this blog post, I’ll try and organise my research into bitesize bits what are easy to read but no promised.

Stitching

-On hems the more stitches per inch the better.
-Stitching should lie flat, not rucking, twisting or folding.
-Stitching should be invisible unless on garments where there is stitching for decoration (i.e. jeans.)
-There should be no loose threads and all seams should be neat.
-Designer work is often hand finished.

Seams

-There should be a generous fabric (a good amount is 3/4 inch+) allowance on all hems/seams. This means they are less likely to come undone.
-No rough edges
-Should lie flat.
-Always sewn straight and then finished to prevent unraveling.

Buttons

-Quality buttons.
-On coats, sturdy buttons that have been sewn on by hand and are backed by another, smaller button.
-Button Holes should be finished off cleanly with no threads hanging.
-Bound buttonholes or keyhole buttonholes rather than straight buttonholes.
-Sturdy materials such a metal or mother of pearl.

Linings

-The more the merrier. In trousers, linings to the knee, in skirts linings at least to the back. In coats and jackets, full linings including silky sleeve linings. Extra linings for coats and jackets to extend the season of the garment.

Cashmere

-Hold them up to the light and put your hand behind it – you shouldn’t be able to see your hand through a thick, quality cashmere.
-Stay tape should line the shoulders of a cashmere sweater (or any other stretchy fabric) this stops the garment stretching in the wrong places like the shoulders.

Fabric

-Garments with a high thread count are best, they will feel really light to touch and will move through your hands like silk.
-Patterns should match all over the garment.
-Fabric should have been cut / sewn on the grain.
-It shouldn’t look or feel cheap.
-If it is coarse in feel then it’s probably not designer.

I’m going to need some help from my thrifting team here. I have little idea about what stitches are good quality ones. More research is needed.

I’ve always suffered with dry lips and until recently I used to slather myself in Vaseline and believed the job was done. How wrong I was, it is actually quite bad for your lips to just coat them in petroleum jelly. It tricks your lips into thinking they are moisturised so they stop producing as much moisture as they should be so as soon as you stop using Vaseline you are dry again. This actually made a whole deal of sense to me because although I found Vaseline soothed the dryness it never cured it and I had to be constantly greased up. Not a sexy look.

Having gotten my hands on some Emu Oil Lip balm I first tried the Strawberry flavour (one of six different flavours), the formula for it has been changed now, it was very hard and difficult to get any on your finger to suitably moisturise your lips. Apparently now it has been changed, thanks to my suggestion, and is now soft and fluffy like all the rest. I went back to bog standard, non-natural lip balms. I’d presumed that all the Emu Oil Lip Balms would be hard and in need of a few hours in the airing cupboard before they were usable but once again I was wrong. I picked up some Orange lip balm. Well, it hasn’t left my bag since I got it, I use it every day and I have soft supple lips all the time.

I don’t have to constantly cover myself in the stuff, one or two applications a day to moisturise the skin is usually enough. I don’t tend to urge people to do anything but stop ruining your lips with harsh petrochemicals in crappy products. Use natural lip balms.

This is what the website says about it:

Emu Lip Balm is an excellent lip moisturiser made from Emu Oil, Organic Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter. it protects against the effects of wind and sun.
Because it is made from all natural ingredients it is safe for even the most sensitive skin types and for children.

Apply it to sore and cracked lips as often as you like.

It may also be used on small areas of dry skin anywhere on the body.
Emu Lip Balm is available unflavoured or tasting of Licorice, Orange, Peppermint, Strawberry or Vanilla.

Ingredients: Emu Oil, (Organic) Shea Butter (Unrefined), (Organic)Cocoa Butter (unrefined), Beeswax, Vitamin E Oil

Just look at the ingredients all natural ingredients with no parabens or petrochemicals in site. This makes for a very happy Jess. I intend to try the Strawberry flavour now that it has been fixed although I really do love the orangey flavour. It makes me feel summery even though it is tipping it down with rain.

The lip balm can be purchased along with many other fab products over at www.emu-oil-well.com

These products aren’t on the website yet but you lovely people get a sneak preview. These three products are something that I’ve been really looking forward to since they were announced a couple of months ago.

Firstly -

Emu Oil Soap Bar

As someone who is not a huge fan of their Antiseptic Liquid soap (it’s just that Tea Tree smell, not a fan) this is going to be amazing. Coconut scented, soft on the hands and come in small travel sized bars. I already have myself a sample that I intend to take away with me when I go away in November, I have a slight obsession with coconut flavoured things, love them. I think the reason being is that the smell reminds me of holidays as we used to have a coconut scented spray sun cream. Good times.

This little bar will be perfect for those that suffer from a little bit of dry skin on the hands, follow it up with some Emu Oil Hand Cream and you be smoother than.. well, someone with really smooth hands.

Emu Oil Sugar Face Scrub

I am obsessed with trying any sort of face scrub I can get my hands on, I especially love natural ones with sugar in. I haven’t tried this stuff yet but as soon as I do you will know. It’s safe to say I’m uber excited about this product.

Emu Oil Sugar Body Scrub

This I’m excited about as well, I’m not a body scrub sort of person but I believe this will be a good chance to try some out. I’ve never had the need to exfoliate my body, I’m soft already but maybe I should. I certainly should exfoliate my legs before shaving, I can never get them super smooth!

Extras

Also keep an eye out for Emu Oil Rescue Pack, Emu Oil Face Care Collection, Emu Oil Body Care Collection. All three packs come in sexy, shiny bags too!

The emu oil craze is starting to sweep across celebs everywhere, first it was Zac Efron using it for his appendectomy scar and now it’s Playboy star and actress Jenny McCarthy. She told Michigan Avenue Magazine: “Emu oil. It’s great for anti aging and it’s my favorite thing to put on my face because there are no perfumes or dyes.”

She’s a smart lady for recognising how great emu oil can be for your skin. It plumps and firms the skin preventing wrinkles and smoothing out fine lines. And like she says it has no additives or anything that could potentially be harmful to your skin, this means that even those with the most sensitive of skin can use it. The base oil isn’t for everyone, however, some people may find that Emu Oil Day and Night creams maybe better for their skin. They contain other active ingredients such as Vitamin E and tend to be a lot less oily than putting the oil straight onto your face. Still all natural this could be the alternative for those with oily skin.

There is a misconception that Emu Oil cannot be used by anyone prone to spots or oily patches, this is untrue. There are various products out there that won’t make the skin too oily and all are non-comodegenic which means they don’t clog pores. Emu Oil is in fact very good for acne.

You can get emu oil from www.emu-oil-well.com

I’ve been having some nice late nights recently and before my little photoshoot yesterday (see last post) I decided I needed to get rid of the bags under my eyes and ensure that my foundation went on smoothly. I have some Emu Oil Well eye cream that I decided to use, it’s manly for getting rid of wrinkles, plumping up skin and reducing bags from under the eyes. I’m more than happy to stop the wrinkles before they even appear so this stuff is a life saver.

Like you’d expect with an oil it was quite…oily. However, it didn’t just sit on my skin it absorbed quickly and the softness that followed was hard to explain. My eyelids and under my eyes were silky smoothe and a pleasure to touch. I decided to stroking my eyelids wouldn’t get me very far and moved on to looking in the mirror. I guessed it would take a little while before my eyes looked fresh and shiny again but that wasn’t the case! I already looked more awake and my face was ready for the application of foundation.

Regular readers will know my love of Emu Oil products and this one is on par with all the others. A brilliantr product, great for anti-aging amongst other things. I’ll let you know in 20 years or so if it has worked on my wrinkles.
