How to Accessorise – the edgy, urban way

When it comes to choosing edgy, on-trend clothes, most women are pretty switched on. However, accessorising the look is often another matter. After all, you’ve got your biker jacket, your slouchy blouse and high-waisted jeans; you don’t need anything else, right?

Think again. The right accessories can make or break your fashion-forward look. Here’s more information.

It’s about the right jewellery…

It’s an obvious place to start when talking accessories, but a vital one, nonetheless. With jewellery, it’s a good idea to think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to layer up (for example, four or five necklaces of varying lengths, or plenty of bangles) and look for unexpected materials too – like leather chokers or fabric bracelets.

Don’t forget those ankles too. Cropped trousers have made a huge comeback this year, and a cute little anklet is an immediate attention-grabber.

What about the hair?

The top of the head is often forgotten when people accessorise. Admittedly, you might not want to wear that cool fedora if you’ve just blow-dried your hair to perfection; but you can still add a quirky head-scarf or alice band. Even a little hair-clip adds interest.

Get the sunglasses out

Okay, so the sun isn’t reliably making an appearance all the time; but have faith, it’ll soon be summer. In which case, you need to reach for the stylish sunglasses pronto. If you’re buying a pair of sunnies, it’s a good idea to go to the shop and try out some different styles, as some will suit your face-shape more than others.

At present, 50s-style shades are all the rage, as are over-sized aviator ones. If they’ve got the 70s-style double-bridge, all the better.

Is a tattoo too much commitment?

A piece of high-quality ink is a great accompaniment to the ‘edgy’ look. However, this is a long-term commitment, and might not be something you want to do. If permanent tattooing isn’t your thing, check out some of the temporary tattoos available out there. They’ve come a long way, and now, most are hardly discernible from the genuine thing.

Get the scent right

Humans are hard-wired to respond to scent. It can even completely change your mood, or so science claims. If you want a fragrance that matches your look (and makes you feel like a rock-star) search for an eau de parfum that features bold, unexpected ingredients; like pink pepper, citrus or ginger. Some masculine scents will do just as well – if you need some inspiration, browse sites like Copycat Fragrances.

Check the overall effect

There’s a risk that you can over-accessorise; so when you’ve selected your items, put them all on and survey yourself in the mirror. The look might need some editing, and that’s fine – have fun experimenting until you achieve the vibe you’re going for.

Don’t be afraid to try out some statement accessories too – though if you’re going for something ‘stand-out’, you might want to tone your other accessories down. Let those bold, bright pieces have centre-stage!
