The beginning of Fitness Challenge One
I weighed and measured this morning, all in preparation for the fitness challenge Running Bunn and I are undertaking.
Somehow, I’ve managed to put on 2kg over the weekend. So hopefully that’ll be easy to lose! My starting stats are:
- Weight: 84.5kg / 186lbs
- Chest: 40″
- Waist: 34″
- Hips: 42″
My muscles have just about recovered from my PT session on Friday, an early morning 2.3k on Saturday and a 7 mile walk (plus roast dinner) yesterday. Tonight I’ll be attempting my 4.6k route with the boyf. Under 45 minutes would be nice but I’m not holding out much hope for that. It is very, very cold.
I’m not going to update here every day but follow me on Twitter or Tumblr for up to the minute complaints and victories.
I’ll also share the beautiful charts Ali and I made to track our progress this week. (I might even make mine into a PDF for you to download.)
Fitness Challenge 1
I had a bit of a brainwave earlier on and I ran it past Ali of Running Bunn/Bunn the Baker and she’s in. We are going to do a series of week-long fitness experiments. On the surface these things are to see how different types of fitness affect us, our moods, weight loss etc.
A bonus will be the fact that we will be working hard doing what is essentially a blogging meme.
The first challenge
30 minutes exercise every day for one week.
I don’t have the time to exercise every day of the week, nor does Ali. We have full times jobs, families and lives to lead. But let’s try and make time. I read something on Tumblr about how people busier than me manage to make time to exercise. I’m sure that’s true but I’ve no idea how.
Looks like I’ll be having some early morning runs next week!
The reason for exercising 30 minutes every day is to see how it affects our bodies. It’s said you should have some rest days. Obviously if one of us picks up an injury next week then we aren’t going to hurt ourselves trying to keep up with the challenge but varied exercise should be all right. (No one ask me to run 5k every day next week.)
Ali is getting to work on making progress charts. I will keep you updated here with how we are getting on. I imagine there will be lots of swearing, sleeping and anti-social behaviour. Hopefully, though, no failure.
Any words of wisdom and motivation would be greatly received right about now.
Half a year of fitness
I’ve just been looking back through photos from these last six months and marvelling at how much my body has changed. I’ve lost just over two stone and I feel better than I ever have done. I can run, move and dress better than I could six months ago. I appreciate the hard work that losing weight takes and I now enjoy it! It’s still a bit of struggle to go out and run when it’s cold but once I’m out there it’s great!
I just want to say thank you to everyone who has commented on my blog, spurred me on through Twitter!
Moving forward into 2012 I’ve got new goals:
- Be in the 10 stone range by July when I see The Darkness in Thetford
- Run 5k in under 40 minutes
- Run 5k in under 35 minutes
- Wear size 14 jeans
- Wear size 12 jeans
Bring it on!
Fitness: It’s not just about losing weight
Inspired by the glorious Bangs and a Bun. She recently wrote a piece entitled Women, Fitness and the Myth which touches on how women usually only begin running to lose weight. So when they don’t lose weight they give up.
I agree with everything Bangs has to say in that piece. Women aren’t told about the other benefits to running and working out. It’s all about losing weight. I think the weight loss is a huge motivator but running can plateau you as you begin to lose fat and gain muscle. Women see their efforts as useless and go back to some fad diet.
If you run, mix up your routine, eat well and add in some strength training then you will lose fat. And it’s likely to be the sort that stays off.
It’ll be difficult at first, you’ll worry about what people think of you, it might take a while to find a comfortable speed and breathing can be dificult. You’ll ache, you’ll worry about getting injured and you’ll be all sweaty.
Then you’ll hit a point when you realise that those five flights of stairs you climbed in the multi-storey car park haven’t left you puffing, your jeans will fit better and people will comment on how good you look.
You’ll run again and you’ll realise how free you feel. How much fitter you are than all the people slowly plodding along as you whizz by them. Then you’ll ache but you’ll feel strong and you will get that runners high and it will be the best fucking feeling in the whole world.
With fitness comes power. You’ll feel like you can do anything. You’ll look great, feel great and will have so much more confidence. Everyone will be jealous. Even if you start by going for a walk, just do it. Getting out of the door is the hardest part.
Now, go for a run.
