It should be about variety in the media

16 Nov

Crystal renn, model, plus size, fashionYesterday I was surfing through Tumblr looking a pretty pictures of gorgeous people. I happened across a naked picture of Crystal Renn – the plus size model – I was a little overwhelmed by her daring and her gorgeous body. She had a few rolls of fat, great boobs and gorgeous legs.

Someone had commented underneath the picture saying that it was so refreshing to see a real woman and that she was sick of seeing girls who looked like coat hangers just waiting for a dress to be draped over them.

For a moment I agreed.

A few comments down someone had put ‘but what about the girls who are naturally skinny’. That got me thinking. Everyone is so quick to slag off curvy women for being fat and not looking great in clothes when that really isn’t the case. And yet people who support curvier models are even quicker to slag off stick thin girls who are the centre of the modelling industry.

I don’t think the fashion industry should be exclusive to thin women but equally I don’t think all fashion should be aimed at women with curves. There should be more variety in the industry and in the media. We should be seeing models that look great in the clothes they wear. A 50′s style dress with a waist belt would look great on a model like Crystal Renn but rubbish on a skinny model. And there are clothes that would look better on someone with less boob and hip.

Not only will this help people with their own fashion choices because they’ll know from the outset what should suit them (because, come on, some people really have no idea). But it’ll also promote a healthier body image. In real life there is a much wider range of body shapes and sizes then is portrayed in the media. This is what leads to pro-anorexia sites and young girls starving themselves to be at their thinnest.

The fashion industry has its flaws but I think it’s getting better.

What do you think?

Who do you ask to dye your hair?

14 Nov

A couple of days ago I got it into my head that I was going to dye my hair purple. Not an outrageous, over the top purple but something subtle. Maybe a dark colour that looked purple in the light. Well, after a tiny amount of research I decided to go with the Swarzkopf Mystic Violet. It was £3.50 from Tesco. I was tempted to buy some Cosmic blue, a colour I’ve tired before, in case this went horribly wrong. I forgot.

I asked Ben, my boyfriend, to dye my hair. He moaned and moaned about it but eventually the gloves were on and he was shaking the mixing bottle (not a euphemism).

He’s not gentle when it comes to hair dyeing but he is a perfectionist. He wanted every part of my hair covered – and my face, neck and ears.

This was the – slightly over exposed – outcome. I was going to be as purply-red as my hair!

My scalp was also purple. (Please note customised Thin Lizzy t-shit – I’m still rock).

30 minutes later and we washed the colour out. I was in love with the dark colour that had hints of purple. Then it dried! What a bloody amazing colour. And it’s shiny, unlike my shitty, dull brown hair of before.

The colour here actually looks a lot redder than it is. I’ll try and take some natural light photos before we head off to a friend’s to watch the Grand Prix (come on Webber!)

So, Ben dyed my hair and made a great job of it. Who do you get to dye your hair at home?

How I love Clothing at Tesco

14 Nov

It’s no secret that I love Clothing at Tesco. For seriously affordable clothes they do some amazing stuff. So when they contacted me offering to let me choose something from their site to style up I was so excited. I decided to choose something I wouldn’t normally go for.

catdress

Ruby Rocks printed maxi dress from Clothing at Tesco.

It’s a size 16, which I was a bit weary about because in dresses I’m usually an 18, but this fits perfectly. The big waist band is slimming as it nips me in at the waist. I am very impressed and I love this dress, it can be dressed down, like the above. Or dressed up with a glittery jacket and some nice heels.

Clothing at Tesco also said that I could nominate a blogger to also receive an item from the site. I’m choosing InTheseHeels – one of the first blogs I began to read regularly and she shares my ridiculous love of shoes.

Brave nails

11 Nov

I’m growing my nails again – it’s an ongoing battle between me and my nail biting habit – which means I’m obsessed with nail polishes. I’ve found that I’ve been wearing my Eyeko Rain Polish almost constantly. But now that the weather has turned grey and dark I figured I needed something a little more autumnal.

I treated myself to two Eyeko polishes. Military Polish – a dark green – and Posh Polish – a sort of taupe colour. It took a lot of debate in my head on which one to wear yesterday. I eventually resorted to asking Ben who decided that the Military Polish was the better colour.

I’ve had nail polishes that go on better than this, it was either thin and pale or I put on too much and it was gloopy. Eventually after three thin coats I was sorted. The colour is darker than I imagined and most of the time it looks like a very muddy dark brown. But I love it. I love that in some lights it looks like I’m wearing black nail polish. Black nail polish always makes me look pale, this colour seems to compliment my skin tone and clothing much better.

If you are planning on getting your hands on some Eyeko stuff then use my Ambassador code – E10784 -at the check out. It makes me look good and if you spend over a tenner then you get a free gift! It’s win, win.
