Proud to have caused a stir

28 Oct

rarIn response to my post Why do I need to be thin? a few bloggers have come together to post their views on the topic. The overall response to those posts is incredible and I’m happy that I could conjure up such a talking point with fantastic bloggers and their readers.

Firstly CeCe of LoveBrownSugar started it in response to my post talking about how one of her looks has no hype on Lookbook.nu . I don’t understand it because it’s a good look! It’s fashion forward and she looks hot. That’s more than can be said for some of the scruffy buggers that hog the front page of the site.

Then a post appeared quoting CeCe and myself on the Grit and Glamour blog. It went into beautiful detail and was so beautifully written. It got a great response in the comment and even a note back from one of the founders of Lookbook.nu – which you can read here.

I then saw a post on A Little Bird Fashion. Another fashion blogger who agrees with us and feels the same way. I think it’s the fickle nature of fashion and the way the industry dictates what is hot. And hot appears to be young, white and thin.

It also seems that it’s not that I’m a ‘fat girl writing about fashion’ that affects the hits I get but my blogging style, lack of posts like the previous and a lack of structure. Thanks to those on Reddit who pointed out most of that.

Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post. You posed some great points and to those of you who pointed out that I wasn’t fat, thanks. <3

I urge you to go read the above blog posts, each of those wonderful ladies make fantastic points and I hope their posts spark more debate on this situation.

Another thing to think of is the fact that we are putting ourselves (actually some bloggers are refusing to) onto those sites which are ultimately beauty contests. We are putting ourselves, our styles and our non conformist bodies out there to be judged.

It’s annoying but I can’t help but feel that maybe we shouldn’t go on them if we are going to complain.

But come on. A little bit of hype wouldn’t hurt.

Why do I need to be thin?

20 Oct

workyIt seems that on sites like LookBook or Chictopia you only get hype and fans if you are thin. But there are a few quite fat girls, bigger than me, who look amazing and have tons of followers.

So it’s not just thin girls that get hype – although mainly it is – but also fat girls too.

I’m somewhere in the middle and I don’t get hype. I don’t understand that. It’s not as if it’s my looks because they all get similar amounts of hype.

Then there’s the prejudice around fat girls want to buy clothes, work in fashion or just go shopping. I don’t have shopping issues any more, at least not like I did. But I feel that when I tell people that I run a fashion blog that they are thinking ‘really? But you’re fat.’

I’m not going to say that clothes look better on girls with curves because that’s something different to saying clothes look good on fat girls. If you know how to dress and tailor your style to your shape then clothes can look good on anyone, you just have to do it right, it doesn’t matter if yo’re skinny, curvy or fat.

I sort of feel that I don’t got a great deal of comments or love on my blog because I’m a fat girl writing about fashion. Maybe I should promote this blog to plus size communities but why do I have to pigeon-hole myself. This isn’t a plus size fashion blog. I cover everything from high street and designer to plus size retailers. I’ve even covered the sites that don’t go up to my size. I can still know about and love fashion even if I’m not a skinny model.

Yes this is a rant and you’re probably all bored of posts like this cropping up on the internet but I want to know -

Do you have to be thin to be popular (in life, blogging or Lookbook)?

Missguided nail polish

20 Oct

I’ve heard really good things about these polishes and I just wanted to share them with you. The image below is the entire collection, each polish is just £5. Bargain.

Particularly stunning is the nude – MissCellaneous – and the black/gold – MissFit. Nude is so in right now and while it isn’t a nail trend I’ve tried it looks good on so many people. I think if you are looking to try the nude nails trend then you can’t really go wrong with a £5 bottle of polish.

The MissFit is a black filled with little bits of gold glitter. Black and gold is a great combination and I know that polish would go amazingly with a leopard print dress I’ve got. However, as much as I LOVE anything with glitter, polish containing it is so hard to get off.

If anyone can give me any tips for removing glittery nail polish then that would be lovely.

All the nail polishes, along with equally yummy clothes, shoes and accessories are available from www.missguided.co.uk
